DON'T beat the couple to the reception
The wedding is the reason for the celebration that takes place after the ceremony. The worst thing a guest can do is to skip the ceremony and beat the couple to the reception. For whatever circumstances, it doesn't work the other way around, because you are invited to "THE WEDDING", and should witness the most important part where the couple exchange they're "I DO's". The couple also walks alongside with their respective parents at the beginning of the ceremony. The reception is where the RECEIVING LINE is, and you can't be "Received" if you are already seated in the reception hall. However, as long as you have a good reason for missing the ceremony and share that with the couple, it's permissible.
